During my month at Cleland, the Bush Stone Curlews captured my heart. Their plaintive cry drew me back time and again. Tragically, these beautiful birds have faced significant declines in South Australia, disappearing from about 90% of their former mainland range. Aboriginal stories tell of how Curlew mourns after discovering Owl betrayed their friendship by eating her babies, leading to her plaintive call. Here I have depicted the tragedy enacted by present day threats. Fox, the accidental exterminator, stalks in the forest, while fallen timber, essential to Curlew's camouflage has been collected to make a camp fire.
